he's not really talking to us
he's talking to execs
Yep. Frank Zappa said something similar in the 80s or 70s about the music industry too. How label heads used to be run by old dudes who had no idea what was good or kids wanted, so they took risks saw what stuck. Then younger guys took over with the attitude that they knew what ppl wanted, so everyone became risk averse and all about big wins and money.

I think he is saying what a lot of fans fans feel. There could always be more of those risk taking films made but I don't it its a bleak market. More could be made for sure.
However he's also speaking as a director who probably feels personally slighted. Some films he has succeeded in getting made probably took long periods of time to get made because of money, and some films he wants to do won't ever get made because of money.

Box office shouldn't be the sole purpose of course, but look at the budgets of his films, and many other 'auteurs', you've had to put asses in seats for those budgets. It's no surprise execs aren't taking chances, as they're the ones who have to deal with a Hugo or Silence not making any money, and not him or these other directors.

A lot of these old film makers are getting pushed out because the new standard in the industry is to make money at the box office first make art second
If your arthouse movie cost as much to make as a superhero genre film or whatever you can bet its not getting made because the box office return will not be the same

To these film makers the superhero movies are the root cause of this Hollywood upheaval when really its because of streaming removing DTV sales from the market

in 1990 when Scorsese made Goodfellas.. he didn't set out to create a movie that was gonna be the "biggest" or most popular.. he set out to create a movie that would be the best but also about content that he cares about. now the movie will make money forever.. because it's a classic. People will always wanna stream it or buy the physical copy or watch on TV etc..

"family movies" are supposed to gross more... that's 2 adults + 2 children vs. a drama that's 2 adults. Simple math.
