Not to mention they're probably banking on him taking another job and giving up some of the bread they owe him in the process as three years is a long time to be out of the public eye as a sports analyst especially at his age.
It's why I believe Beadle and ESPN never did a buyout and she just sat out the remainder of her deal until the time was up.
Yep, as far as I know, the choice is to either sit out the remainder of the deal, in which case Disney gets to write it off as a loss for tax purposes, or take a new job and forgo the rest of the contract, in which case Disney no longer owes that money. They win either way.
Isn't Van Gundy in the same boat? I wonder if their contracts would allow them to take coaching jobs until the contract runs out? If someone is paying me to do absolutely nothing, I'm using it to take a four year vacation and getting every single dime. Volunteer or intern if you need something to do.
I imagine there's language in the original contract that allowed him to leave for a coaching job without either side owing the other anything, and that's been carried forward into the termination agreement to make it so he has to choose between taking literally ANY other NBA related job, or riding out his contract.
The shytty thing is that it puts the talent in a tough position because in today's media market, sitting down for three or four years is damn near accepting an early retirement. The market moves so much faster, and in a different way than it did before, where taking the paid vacation was the smart move.
For someone like Van Gundy, if he really was considering going back to coaching, it's gotta be now. He was probably already an iffy hire since he last coach in 2007. Waiting any longer isn't going to make him any better of an option, really. And there's an almost never ending procession of former NBA personalities that can take a color commentary or studio job while he sits out, and make employing him even less necessary. And while Beadle still has a job now after her break, it's definitely not anywhere near as high profile as her precious work. Given, that's also probably partially due to having literally worked almost everywhere before previously, but still.
