Saudi money is changing the landscape for many sports. First soccer, then golf, now tennis.

Already saw what’s happened with golf.

Now buying up soccer legends.

It might not seem obvious but after reading about the NBAs new “in season tournament” I am convinced this was done to preempt another similar Saudi financed raid on athletic talent.

That’s why the incentives are monetary.

All of these sports leagues limit (although sometimes the enforcement leaves a lot to be desired) financial compensation bc ultimately the owners are king. The saudis are upending that balance by offering these astronomical contracts without anywhere near the kind of off the field obligations.

PGA Tour is great because of how competitive it is. It's a true meritocracy where athletes are paid based on their results per tournament. Imagine how competitive/intense NBA/MLB/NHL regular season would be if teams got paid based on wins

Unless you're an athlete or a family member reaping the benefits, you shouldn't be a fan of what the Saudis are doing as a sports fan. It removes great talent from competition.

And we're not even going into the whole sports washing objective Saudis are really up to.
