Two Miami girls provided key information to police that led to the arrest of a suspect in several attack on females in recent weeks.
Terrence Jefferson, 33, an ex-con who was out on probation, is now back in jail facing additional sexual assault and kidnapping charges.
“We are really happy that this person is no longer in the streets,” said Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa at a Wednesday news conference.
The police chief said a 9-year-old girl who Jefferson tried to attack and robbed provided investigators a partial license plate number of the car Jefferson was driving, thanks to a license tag memorizing game the girl often plays with her father.
“With her help, as well as information that came to us from other sources, we arrested Mr. Jefferson last week,” Orosa said.
Jefferson began his crime spree shortly after being released from prison in November after serving a 3-year for armed robbery.
Orosa said Jefferson used a black Impala that belonged to girlfriend in “his crime wave’’ in the northend of Miami. Orosa said the girlfriend thought he was job hunting.
His arrest came a few days ago as part of a separate investigation into a sexual assault.
The manhunt for Jefferson intensified following an incident on Dec. 30 where a woman sitting in her car programming her GPS was surprised by an armed Jefferson, who pushed her and climbed behind the wheel of her car and assaulted her.
The next day, Jefferson drove the Impala in the same area, where he approached the 9-year-old and her 12-year-old sister. He accosted the girls at gunpoint but they managed to escape.
The girls were unharmed, but they dropped their cell phones and laptops, which Jefferson stole.
According to documents released, Jefferson initially attracted the attention of detectives in Dec. 28 when he tried to abduct a woman in the Impala.
The woman told police he approached as she walked and offered her a ride. The woman ignored the subject and tried to keep walking until it started to rain and accepted his offer.
That's when the suspect pulled a gun and shouted: “Do not look at me or I'll kill you.”
When he stopped the car, the woman managed to open the door, jumped out and escape.
