I've managed to avoid the gore porn that people love until the Ukrainian family that recently went viral (Google 'Tatiana Perebeinis'). Apparently NYT put it on their front page.

The framing of the shot is what makes it memorable/distinct from the typical gratuitous death pics. They're near the curb, adorned in coats and carrying suitcases like an everyday trip to the airport. It looks like they are asleep with some blood on their faces but apparently a mortar round hit them. Reminds me of the death of the Syrian boy whose body was discovered on the beach that went viral.

I don't think Putin can afford to obliterate Ukraine--even if he had the means, which I doubt he does. They can destroy some of the infrastructure, but unless he uses nukes or chemical weapons--which, again, I don't he'd do--all a scorched-earth campaign would do is drain the ordinance of the Russian military (which doesn't grow on trees) for an uncertain purpose.

The main problem I see is that It would kill a lot of Ukrainians, but not enough for to render them completely impotent and harmless. During WW2, the Western Allies and the USSR waged total war on Germany and engaged in as ruthless a campaign of destruction as ever seen. For instance, American artillery would systematically level entire towns and villages at the slightest sign of resistance. Yet, after the largest-scale, most expensive military effort in history, Germany only lost about nine percent of its population--and that's including military losses. It was hugely painful, but in ten years their economy was humming and Germans were flocking to the colors again.

Of course, this is what I consider a rational analysis; Vlad may very well not be looking at this rationally.

Obliterate was probably too strong a word I agree. I meant it in the sense that he would inflict as much damage as possible before an eventual retreat.

Dresden is a good example of what you mean and that's the state Putin could leave some Ukrainian cities in. We witnessed during the Syria or Chechnya campaigns that Russian bombings were quite indiscriminate and many civilians might be targeted as well in this conflict.

We'll see and hopefully we are wrong but with Russia's track record...

Very shortsighted idealists they are. If they were in charge of the US, we would all be doomed. I used to halfway respect these far left folks. They have lost all my respect during this debacle. They won't even look at their heroes (Sanders and Warren) for examples on how to act.

These fools would let a foreign entity attack the US and then opine about how we probably deserved it and then declare that they will forego all retaliatory measures.
