on the subject of culture, ironically, the soviet union made far better movies than modern russia. they balanced censorship with advancement in film theory and patronage of art projects. the lack of emphasis on box office meant the movies were more "art house", which is not very popular with a wide audience, but the movies are among the most critically acclaimed.

more irony; the best anti-war movie i have ever seen is from the soviet union. clearly, they didnt learn anything from it.

Zyangitsev (sp?) is a great contemporary russian director too :ehh:
