My money is on Putin bluffing to attack. The last thing he wants is a long protracted guerilla war within Ukraine against rebels armed with Western weaponry.

He definitely wants his buffer zones between Russia and NATO codified though.

Also, Russia is as dependent on Europe as a buyer of natural gas, as Europe is dependent on Russia for said gas. All this screams irrational insanity.

Then again, is Putin sane?

Its winter time, hes got a lot of leverage in the energy department.

The thing though is that Ukraine is having a mild winter. So there is still mud on the ground. That could slow down an offensive. If it doesn’t happen this month or February Putin may push the war for the early summer.

I don’t see this making any sense. Any urban battle into Kiev would be a bloody mess. Unless he will do to Kiev what he did to Grozny. Putin is likely gonna order his troops to invade eastern Ukraine and form the land bridge in Southern Ukraine. He may keep troops outside Kiev as a constant reminder of Russian force. .

Extremely transparent. He tried to do the same to Obama with Crimea.

He didn't need to up the foreign relations stakes with Trump for obvious reasons.
