Ukraine is a strategic location more than all the other border NATO countries. It's people ran the USSR empire and were the brains behind it. Russia wants to go back to USSR but they know they can't. If you go further east not only is Ukraine a massive country but it would mean that NATO will control the black sea. Turkey is an authoritarian regime that flip flops and Russia can manage them politically. Ukraine is the last domino. If Ukraine falls into NATO Russia is forced to cooperate with the Western economies. Which means that it will be essentially ran by them and their policies.
