The death toll on both sides is staggering but god damn... Russia is just built different. If these numbers are anywhere near true, everyone is looking at Russia like

Putin may be in the process of turning Russia into the 21st centuries largest all you can eat buffet after they fall. If the West and China are smart they will divide Russia up on some colonial style shyt with extremely close oversight. These Moscovites simply can't be left to their own devices.

Fighting Wagner is like a ‘zombie movie’ says Ukrainian soldier

Near Bakhmut, UkraineCNN —
Southwest of the city of Bakhmut, Ukrainian soldiers Andriy and Borisych live in a candle-lit bunker cut into the frozen earth. For several weeks they have been confronting hundreds of fighters belonging to the Russian private military contractor Wagner throwing themselves against Ukrainian defenses.

Disguised in a balaclava, Andriy recounts one seemingly endless firefight when they came under attack by a flood of Wagner fighters.

We were fighting for about 10 hours in a row. And it wasn’t like just waves, it was uninterrupted. So it was just like they didn’t stop coming.”

Their AK-47 rifles became so hot from constant firing, Andriy says, that they had to keep changing them.

“It was about 20 soldiers on our side. And let’s say 200 from their side,” he says.

The Wagner way of war is to send a first wave of attackers that mainly comprises raw recruits straight out of Russian prisons. They know little of military tactics and are poorly equipped. Most just hope that if they survive their six-month contract they can go home rather than back to a cell

“They make the group – let’s say from 10 soldiers – reach 30 meters, then they start digging in to keep the position,” Andriy says of Wagner
.

:wow: that ruskie tactic of feeding their soldiers like cannon fodder ..
Yeah that was the tactic they talked about at Bakhmut. Send the cannon fodder to rush trenches, pinpoint the opposition battery's response, target it with their own artillery and swarm the position once the Ukr battery is out. Rinse, repeat. That way, Wagner's better troops is preserved.

And the troops on those suicide rushes don't seem to have much of a choice anyway... More importantly, the mobiks that are supposed to come in March will give them even more "disposable" troops to continue that way.

Article says 100,000 Ukrainians troops and another 30,000 civilians. Russia has lost 180,000 troops. Who runs out of bodies first?
The issue for Ukraine is not necessarily the number but the quality of their lost troops.

They are likely losing valuable and experienced troops from its Eastern front while Russia mostly lose cannon fodder since their strategy change. The volume of losses is definitely higher for Russia but the quality of men lost is on Ukraine' side.

I wonder how many foreign fighters and "advisors" are in country and what percentage of them are near the front.

True.

Apparently Ruskie have a first wave..then a line behind them making sure they don't retreat...then a line of troops behind them to make sure the 2nd line doesn't retreat.

i wouldnt be expecting attrition to win a war against russia with their meatgrinder mentality. they have far more leftover men than ukraine. ukraine needs strategic goals on the table that will force a retreat, and they need the weapons and training to accomplish it. judging by the way they are supplied by the west, there might not actually be an interest in helping ukraine go that far. keeping russia bogged down indefinitely may actually be the west's goal.

Indefinitely? Russia don't got infinite ammo and gear cheats on. At some point things just won't be able to happen operationally.
by indefinite, it could be until there is a political reason within russia to give up annexed lands, but i cant see how that is even on the table any time soon. the area is actually worth something tactically and economically. this can be russia's vietnam or afghanistan 2.0. sad for ukraine, but beneficial to the west. it's a condition that has to be considered. there was not a strong interest in fighting for eastern european soverignty back in 2014 when mccain was the lone warmonguerer. now that kiev is secured, the west may be gradually going back to usual but with the added benefit of knowing that russia has to pay a higher cost to keep the same land.

EDIT: and i dont believe this level of conflict is requiring weapons and ammo that russia cant continue to manufacture or purchase from "rogue" nations. ukraine would have to actually step it up.
