Probably true. Ukraine doesn't need to burn human resource in places that are of no strategic importance.
It's still their land which is being stolen but they don't have endless men to throw at these places so the smart thing would be to retreat.
So it’s just a minor set back right?:mjcry:

So the Russians made some gains/secured some cities?

What at the facts and what went wrong?
Those would be really minor gains on the Eastern front once secured (because Soledar is not yet gained even).

However considering Prigozhin is making power plays in Russia politically and is in direct confrontation with Shoigu and the military, he's using this campaign to increase its stature and pushing to take Bakhmut as a symbol because that city has little to no significance otherwise according to most experts.

Soledar in this regard is Northeast of Bakhmut and if secured would give them a solid position to bomb it and/or try to encircle it which they have have been failing to do for months.

Soledar is also a town which is known for its salt mines (biggest in Europe) and Wagner often uses conquests to prey on ressources in foreign territories as they did in CAR and Mali. It's been reported that Russia is selling stolen wheat and grains so there is also a ressource aspect to the war though a minor one.

What went wrong ? Not much really it seems. Basically Wagner uses prisoners as cannon fodder trying to brute force Ukr positions and exhaust Ukrainians. Then they use their spec ops to sweep and secure them. They just play a number's game and a very cynical one at that.

They are depopulating their prisons of some of their worst at 0 social cost while gaining troops that serve directly on the front lines so their regular troops/mercs are shielded from it. If it wasn't so unethical, it would be brilliant.
