Mr. Putin must know that a second Cold War would not necessarily go well for Russia — even with its nuclear weapons. Strong U.S. allies can be found on nearly every continent. Mr. Putin’s friends, meanwhile, include the likes of Bashar al-Assad, Alexander Lukashenko and Kim Jong-un.

It's obvious that Putin is backed into a corner. And that may not necessarily be a good thing. I sometimes wonder if he's facing his own mortality while at the same time facing pressure from powerful ppl in Russia, because what he's doing just isn't logical. There's no way out of this that ends well for Russia.
