The scariest part about this whole thing is that, Putin was planning to make a move on Ukraine during Trump's second term. He was really banking on Trump winning. He may not have made such a brash move like a military invasion, but it would have been a move nonetheless. And he would have been unopposed.
In fact, more than that, it would have been Russia and a Trump-helmed U.S. opposing NATO. Trump definitely would have pulled the US from NATO, essentially crippling its effectiveness, and Russia would have expanded west unopposed.

Invasion is not a problem. Occupation is a whole other matter. Especially is a country as large as Ukraine.
