That Mueller's team found out he was lying and played along for a bit so he can incriminate himself more is believable. But that they knew and fed him info so that he can pass it to Trump who then put the same info in his answers is a stretch.

The thing is Mueller didn't find out. He probably already knew before the plea. Manafort only went on trial for his crimes of not reporting lobbying.

The UK is one of the most surveilled countries in Europe. US intelligence already knew he'd gone to the embassy. Manafort and Trump don't know what Mueller knows and what's been connected. There's no way to prepare a joint defense with the truth if both need to lie to cover a crime.
