Even with an Iran deal, there isn't enough capacity to replace Russia's oil and gas output.
Also remember that gas that comes from Kazakhstan via the Caspian Pipeline Consortium goes through Russia.
Russia is a major problem.

Where does Europe get its gas now? Getting it from Russia means that they have to use Rubles to purchase. Is there an alternative?

Exactly this is a desperation act by Russia because Rubles will never be on the level of the Dollar or the Chinese dollar. I bet he didn't consult the oligarchs regarding this announcement.

Germany fukked up thinking that Russia would become their friends, as did most US presidents.
Obama or especially Hillary Clinton was the only one that warned people that these dudes were not looking to enter a diplomatic friendly world.
Europe might need to fukk around and take big L's if they really want to punish Russia. Their current account is increasing cause the price of oil has been driven up and they are still allowed to supply as much as previously. As far as gas goes, it's a fortunate timing that it's not winter now.
