Wow. Roy Jones is a true gentleman.
"People listen to what other people have to say and fail to
seek the truth." - Roy Jones
This is exactly what happened to me some 8 years ago. I entered into one of those typical superficial political discussions where everybody pretends to know what they are talking about, reciting the latest sentiments du jour, largely stereotypical, ill-informed with ad hoc reasoning simply participating in the ritual to seem knowledgeable.
It just so happened that around this time Putin was named man of the year so there was a lot of talk about Russia it's politics etc. This provided me with an easy opportunity to at least be a little bit more informed.
I sought out to hear from the president himself. Many of his speeches were available online in several formats; dubbed in youtube, or fully translated transcripts.
It was then and only then that I was really able to see how deceptively pernicious many news outlets were. Imagine that you say the sky is blue only to read in the newspapers the next day that you said the sky is green. The example is trivial, however when talking about international politics and the threat of war it's truly frightening. I can only conclude that such reporting is totally evil.
A more fitting example that we can recount would be that of Nazi Germany. I'm sure that most of you know that most Germans were not Nazis. In one of Guido Knopp's documentaries about Germany and the war, there was a moment where he asks how could the people have allowed this. Most of the individuals responded with the same answer, 'how could we know?!'
That is to say, they were inundated with reports about Germany being attacked, the existence of the German people is threatened by this nation and that nation and so forth and so on. So most people, believing it, despite the fact that it was a total lie, did their civic duty and sought to kill the invaders or send their sons to kill and be killed all because of a lie.
These days we have the blessing to be able to, from the comfort of our own homes, find perspectives that run the full spectrum in order to verify whether what we are being told is true or not. And, if we don't know, it's perfectly acceptable and even correct to admit ignorance.
With that quote right there, Roy Jones has echoed one of the keys to living a meaningful life.
