Roy Jones Jr. is considered by the majority of both fans and experts to be a faded fighter, competing at a risky age with considerable danger to his health if matched up with younger, stronger opponents.
Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov, a close friend of Jones and the man behind the majority of his latest Russian activities, thinks differently.
“Wha'st Roy is supposed to do? Well, we have some joint plans”, said Hryunov to Gazeta.ru. “The closest of them is a fight for a title in his fifth weight class. We have event set a preliminary date – November 28 in Moscow”.
Hryunov hasn’t directly revealed a possible opponent but gave some tips about the version of the title, which Roy Jones Jr. is looking to fight for.
“This announcement is the theme of next week. But given the fact that Roy will soon be granted Russian citizenship, I cannot see him within the same ring with his future compatriots Denis Lebedev (WBA cruiserweight champion) or Grigory Drozd (WBC cruiserweight titleholder)”.
Roy Jones Jr. (62-8, 45 KOs), who held world titles in four weight classes (160, 168, 175 and 200+ lbs) and was an undisputed light heavyweight champion of the world for several years in late 90’s and early 00’s, isn’t rated by any major sanctioning body but he is also on an eight-fight winning streak since his kayo loss to Lebedev in May 2011.
He is also 3-0, 3 KOs, this year, stopping hardly relevant Eric Watkins (12-10-2) this past Sunday in six rounds. There have been rumors of him facing WBO cruiserweight champion Marko Huck and his successor Krzysztof Glowacki recently.
November 28 is a booked date for Sergey Kovalev’s homecoming and his next title defense which is about to take place in Moscow, Russia. In her interview with the BoxingScene, Main Events CEO Kathy Duva indicated she was looking for some support from Russian businessmen and/or boxing promoters but hasn’t given any names.
