I've been living in Orlando for or over 15 years and, ironically, my subdivision is right next to the Ocoee line.
Taking the irony even further, I found out from my grandfather that our family descends from African Americans who resided in central florida during the massacres and managed to escape. I remember back in high school, we watched Rosewood in one of my history classes and my teacher told us that there are scholarships to AA's who are descendants of the massacre survivors. Had I known about my family history at the time, I would've taken full advantage of it, but oh well.
And yes, Central Florida has a very dark, demonic, history. There are areas here in Ocoee where, if you drive deep enough into the wooded areas, you can still see nooses in the trees. And of course, lets not forget the practice of using black babies as gator bait. But go Gators, huh? Ok. The shyt our ancestors went through was ritualistic sacrifice, birthed from pure, unadulterated hatred. Nothing more, nothing less.
I encourage all AA's to learn your family history. You'd be surprised. I always thought my family was mostly Georgia and northern Florida. Never thought I'd be connected to something deep such as this.
