The Love Below began life as a soundtrack to an as-yet-unmade film about a young man's romantic adventures in Paris. Much of the album concerns itself with the quest for domestic contentment. It's a topic that seems to have preoccupied Benjamin since the end of his relationship with soul singer Erykah Badu; Miss Jackson dealt with the effect of their break-up on the couple's son, the colourfully named Seven Sirius.

How is Hey Ya a sad song?

Its not a sad song per se, but its a song of lament. I dont think the correct verbiage was being used. The song is a definite misnomer. Alot of people like the beat and the cute catch phrases but dont actually listen to the lyrics. Its like my aunt, she wants to get married to some dude, and she wants her wedding song to be Stevie Wonder "overjoyed". You can tell she never listened to the song. She just thinks its a love song and hears the hook. Its a song about lament, not a love song.



Stevie is basically like, damn u bum bytch i did all this shyt and u still aint feelin a nikka?

But I'm here for threads like these. Lyrically, it's clear Hey Ya is a sad song and I understood every song on The Love Below individually but some of you have really helped me piece it all together. Props to all.

I don't think he would've been frustrated. He knew what he was doing and he knew how people would react. He had been at the top of his game for close to 10 years. He knew people liked how his music sounded but were they really listening? Not at all.Hence "y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance."

But you can tell he was giving up on the industry/fans/music thing in general. Making Hey Ya the way he did shows how far ahead he was. "I'm just gunna play with y'all, you don't really understand", on some bored shyt. He made it super obvious and people still didn't catch it.
