Biggie uses literary/story telling devices that I've rarely seen in hip-hop.

His use of foreshadowing in Somebody's Gotta Die is rare for a rapper. that's the type of thing you see in movies. It's all about the execution, although he brings it up you don't expect it.

He was great at writing hooks that had different expressions/emotions behind them dependant on the verse before. For example, on me and my bytch... the first verse is very misogynistic and violent towards the girl.. it ends "you talk slick, I beat you right"... when the hook hits in it sounds like he's emphasising the bytch because he treats her like Mike Vick or something. The second verse we learn she gives as good as she takes and the relationship is stormy, passionate but loving and it ends .

"She'll invite me, politely, to fight, G
And then we lie together, cry together
I swear to God I hope we fukkin die together"

That's some sweet shyt, when the hook comes in it no longer sounds menacing. Notice the foreshadowing again.. he means it as an expression of how much he loves her and we get that but it turns out to be some literal shyt.

Back to my point by the end of the 3rd verse the way he repeats "me and my bytch" sounds so :to: it sounds 100% different from the first time.

He uses the same skill on Real nikkas.

Lyrically he could stack internal rhymes with ease.. shyt was just too smooth

Hope you creeps got receipt,my peeps get dirty like cleats
Run up in your crib, wrap you up in your Polo sheets
6 up in your wig-piece, nikka decease
Muah, may you rest in peace

He was just so free with the rhymes, he would stick a rhyme anywhere in a rap and it would sound smooth

Also his imagery was so vivid sometimes yo would miss the fact that they where metaphors

What ya think all the guns is for?
All-purpose war, got the Rottweilers by the door
And I feed em gunpowder, so they can devour

I don't think he's saying he has literal dogs by the door. His guns just be so vicious they are like rottweilers to enemies.

He's also one of the best rappers at using assonance. Using words that sound similar but don't really rhyme. Just makes his shyt sounds so smooth "conscious of your nonsense".. that doesn't actually rhyme but its assonance... I mean it's so rare for rappers to use that Biggie did it a lot in his work.

There's other things... his enunciation was brilliant. He's one of the few rappers to use dark humour in his raps.

The illest part about it.. is that it seemed totally natural. I know he called himself the Alfred Hitchcock of hip-hop but I don't think he sat down and thought "i'ma throw some foreshadowing in this rap" most people today don't even understand that concept. He just did it because he was ill. That's why people bite his rhymes... they just sound slick.

Biggie was ahead of his time. Maybe only Nas is as naturally talented as an MC. And Nas has more obvious strengths and weaknesses.

Biggie was a popular rapper, but he really didn't change the game...His impact on the game is greatly exaggerated...

I look at the game today, and I really don't see Biggie...
Really? You don't see rappers take things from Biggie? You don't see Ross trying to emulate Biggie? There's countless tracks that have either sampled his voice, or straight up took his rhymes

I just don't see it and I don't hear it...

Ross is not trying to emulate Biggie...People made that comparison, and he is just running with it for promotion...

Biggie didn't stand for anything...He had a collection of songs addressing various topics but he didn't have a "signature" image...

We associate 2Pac with the "thug life" imagine, Nas is the project kid watching the streets through a window in his bedroom, Jay Z is the materialistic fictional drug lord, Eminem is the typical white boy working in McDonalds and spitting in your fries...

Rick Ross is more like a Jay Z if you ask me, they both have a fictional image of being kingpins of the streets who moved boat loads of cocaine...

But the OP asked how did Biggie change the game lyrically in terms of rhyming, and the reality is he DID NOT...

:mjlol:

it's not hard to pick amazing beats when you have Easy Mo Bee, DJ Quik, Dr Dre, Daz in his prime, and Shock G making joints like So Many Tears.
