I think they should play up the 1k reign heading into Mania, and then have him lose which would devastate him causing him to disappear for a while. Imagine a psycho Roman returning at SummerSlam going on a complete warpath.

Yes, That's the point of my post. He was so close and lost it which drives him crazy.
Cody literally has no place whatsoever in this story
He’s just here because he’s selfish and wants his WM moment even at the expense of everyone and everything else involved
I don’t even mind him being champ eventually but it has no place in this storyline, he was only thrown in the picture so he can finally get his Wrestlemania moment

then take time off cause reasons
vacate those belts cause he has to take time off
have belts be AGGRESSIVELY fought over (setting up myriad storylines across both brands)
come back bloodlineless like "brehs..... where my belts? I never lost them
" kicking off "Return of the Ring Rusted King" storyline into a wrestlemania, during which Roman a lone Tweener with no cheating Bloodline to secure him wins.

I guess all Roman needed was cancer, Paul Heyman and Sami Zayn to finally get smart fans on his side.
Lettuce be honest...title reign was getting stale as hell post last year's Wrestlemania. Sami added some extra juice to it. Roman Reign's is basically the same guy he's been since he went solo.. three things changed: He got cancer so neckbeards couldn't shyt on it, he didn't have to perform in front of a crowd for a year and he got sprinkled with Heyman and Sami dust.

This doesn't explain how we're past the point of Jey Uso being the one to pin Reigns. This all started with Jey and Roman. I don't give a damn about Cody and his moment. He can wait another year.
It doesn't matter if Cody wins at Mania. All that matters is that one day, he becomes champion. That's "finishing the story" for him.
The way I see it, WHOEVER beats Roman Reigns should actually elevate from it. No matter what happens, Cody Rhodes will always be a big deal in the WWE. It honestly won't change much about his perception or the level he's on.
