I think Cuaron’s intended purpose was to make this a portrait of a moment in time by his own words. Although I agree with the unnecessary “epic scale” he shot a movie that is supposed to be a personable story into his childhood upbringing, there were many times I felt I was watching The Revenant wit how vast he shot some scenes. But indeed this is a story of memories of ones upbringing and thus could have used a more smaller scope vocal point I do agree.

Despite its minor lackings and slow burn arthouse tendencies it’s still one of the most gorgeous and stunning films to watch without a doubt.
Yeah, the best way that I can describe it is that Cuaron's intention in every scene is to make it look as striking as possible instead of telling the actual story at hand.

There was no story. This film is trash. That Polish dude Pawlikowski made a black and white film a few years ago that was way better, Ida, and Cold War this year. Roma is all hype and Cuaron's overrated bullshyt like this and Gravity is getting on my nerves.

There's no question it's an artistic and aesthetic achievement. I was lucky enough to catch it at my local indie theater, and the sound design in particular left me in awe.

That said, I didn't fall in love with the full package. I could see Cuaron's intention, but I was never able to connect with any of the characters. That feeling of detachment never went away, unfortunately. The attempts at empathy for the maid felt forced, like they came from someone who only experienced those events secondhand.

Between 7/8

I like a lot about it, just didn't knock me out like so many others.

I consider myself a movie head but the trailer on Netflix doesn’t speak to me.

Doesn’t appear to be a story that speaks to me plus the film gotta be very interesting to watch in black and white.
