got about 25min and turned it off, wasn't in the mood for it. will check it out again later...cuaron is one of my favorites but not sure this one is for me.
Yeah, the best way that I can describe it is that Cuaron's intention in every scene is to make it look as striking as possible instead of telling the actual story at hand.I think Cuaron’s intended purpose was to make this a portrait of a moment in time by his own words. Although I agree with the unnecessary “epic scale” he shot a movie that is supposed to be a personable story into his childhood upbringing, there were many times I felt I was watching The Revenant wit how vast he shot some scenes. But indeed this is a story of memories of ones upbringing and thus could have used a more smaller scope vocal point I do agree.
Despite its minor lackings and slow burn arthouse tendencies it’s still one of the most gorgeous and stunning films to watch without a doubt.
fukk ya'll. This was art.
I a few times.
The same people Cuaron cold are the same nerds who revere Kubrick. I don't want to hear it
I respect that, but people say the same thing about :nolan: and like his films cuaron's just always work for me.There's no question it's an artistic and aesthetic achievement. I was lucky enough to catch it at my local indie theater, and the sound design in particular left me in awe.
That said, I didn't fall in love with the full package. I could see Cuaron's intention, but I was never able to connect with any of the characters. That feeling of detachment never went away, unfortunately. The attempts at empathy for the maid felt forced, like they came from someone who only experienced those events secondhand.

I saw the other day you still scored it pretty highly on Letterboxd though :smugnolan:
Yeah, this is a fair score.Between 7/8
I like a lot about it, just didn't knock me out like so many others.
I consider myself a movie head .....
plus you gotta be very interesting to watch a black and white film.
