We need to start having a serious discussion about where Roc Marci fits in on an all-time GOAT list.

Don't do that.

I hate all these top 10/50 lists. It's all subjective and in the end people end up arguing for nothing. Roc, Ka, DOOM, Nas, Lupe, and Ghost are my favorites. That's not up for debate it's who I like. Not trying to hear a Pac or Jay stan tell me I'm wrong :manny:

If we're talking about someone's place in history that's another story.

I been playin this shyt since last night . I like what i heard but i dont know where to put this. Just want to say im proud of the man. Playa came so far ,from marceberg to this is just something else . I cant even compare this to reloaded cuz it just wouldnt be fair. This reminds me of marcberg so much (the vibe) .this one is gonna take some time but one track that stuck out for me was god loves you. :mjcry::wow:

Ima need some more time with this one because right now i just cant call it to where it ranks against his other shyt. For now ill just say i havent felt like this about any of his projects since reloaded.
I feel you. This is almost hard to put in a genre and is also maybe his craziest project so far in terms of lyrical density.

I do hear the doom influence in his bars. His verses definitely reminds me of doom. But Roc took the underground version of street rap to modern times. He seems to be the common thread in a lot of hip hop movements since 2010. If DOOM is the godfather of underground rap then Roc is godfather of goon rap:manny:

DOOM's fingerprints are on everything from the goons to the nerds. Listen to Roc, Ka, Earl and you hear DOOM. The samples they use, the loops, and song structure is DOOM. The lazy flow they use is all DOOM. You can't be above DOOM in terms of influence.

Roc isn't a goon rapper. That's more Sean Price. Roc brought the fly side of the streets.

Great points all around. Dapped.

But honestly I don’t think Roc isn’t a goon rapper either. Especially pre-Rosebudd era, lots of his music was about shooting dudes up and slinging drugs.

There was a fly angle, but you can be a fly goon and still be a goon.

:manny:

To me goon rap is just basically a metaphor for street raps. Sean P definitely had more of a ‘willfully ignorant’ angle, but imo they’re both under the goon umbrella.

Goons aren't fly:pachaha:

Someone like Conway is a goon rapper. Benny might talk about guns but he's a hustler not a goon.

I think you misunderstand what “goon” means in the context of goon rap and how it’s used here on the Coli. As a card carrying member of Goon Squad, I can assure you they Roc is the preeminent goon rapper.

Now I’m even more confused by ur statement than I initially was. Lol

I'm confused by your confusion:skip:

I'm saying that goon rappers with the aggressive content usually aren't the smooth, well dressed type. Guys like DMX, 50, Styles, MOP, Sean P, Prodigy, G Rap, Conway etc.

Then there's the rappers with street content but they're more of the smooth, player, hustler type. It's not just tough guy talk. It's lobster, designer clothes, exotic locales, cars, and luxury. That's guys like AZ, Roc, Raekwon at times, Benny, Pusha, etc

Goons aren't eating blackened tilapia with a white hoe that's standing like Anna Kournikova:ufdup:

Roc and DOOM totally different on the production like @TheDarceKnight said Roc could produce movie scores if he wanted, DOOM more about using samples to give you messages in the music

Tbh I don’t even see DOOM influences other the condensing of bars in their verses, I hear more Cam’Ron influence than DOOM if I’m being honest:yeshrug:

Edit: DOOM and Roc are similar with the pop culture references

You can be a wolf and be fly. Trust me, I am both lol. Being fly whether it’s the clothes we choose to wear or lifestyle we like to partake in is in our DNA so it’s second nature. Being a wolf is second nature as well, only a few are born with that instinct, but any civilized man would prefer to keep that part tucked in. You only bring that out when it’s absolutely necessary. I don’t know Roc’s street history so I can’t vouch for that, but his music represents that example I just gave.
