I know some people probably look at that like some guinea-pig shyt. but really that's a job where they need the best people, so they can deal with whatever crazy situation they end up in

He was an Aerospace Engineer, Combat Navy Pilot (Korean War), and test Pilot.
He single handily fixed his broken Gemini craft while in it (IIRC). He was brought in to help with the Apollo 13 issues.
Dude could of came home and had the world at his fingertips, and instead he went into a private and secluded place, become a professor and businessman.
