Just a devastating loss
Kay Slay was the first DJ to play NaS "Ether" on his mixtape: Renegades Part 3.5 hosted by Noreaga. Slay was an absolute monster by 2001 & completely snatched the crown from Clue by sheer force & volume. He was dropping tapes with exclusives EVERY WEEK of the year.
As a huge NaS fan, I always appreciated Slay because while everyone else was riding Jay-Z and afraid to mess up the Rocafella relationship, he stood tall & rocked with the underdog. When Hot 97 banned NaS music after skipping Summer Jam, Slay still played NaS on air.
The Original Gangsters mixtape series from Kay Slay was absolutely groundbreaking because he had Alpo & Azie hosting his mixtapes back in 2000 before the Paid in Full movie dropped.
Anyone who knew me as a teenager knows what him along with Clue, Envy, Drama, Whoo Kid, Green Lantern, S&S, etc meant to me. I was a mixtape DJ at one point & wanted to be them. Never met Slay before but I'm glad I got to speak to him on Clubhouse & tell him how he inspired me.
Kay Slay was instrumental in getting Cam’ron hot on the streets. He hosted the original diplomats mixtapes. The modern day blueprint for what mixtapes became was all Dipset/Kay Slay & 50/Whoo Kidd. They started full artist mixtapes…..before them everyone went to Djs.
Getting a spot on a Clue or Kay Slay mixtape was like winning American Idol as a rapper. What an era. Still remember hitting the mixtape stores. In philly it was Sounds of Upper Darby, Uptown Flava, 52 street. In NY: Harlem Music Hut, Beatstreet (Brooklyn), Canal street.
