I don't think Kendrick knew what he was getting himself into when he name dropped Drake. So once he saw it getting out of hand, he backed away from it. I don't think he thought it would be taken as a diss as much as motivational challenge to his peers. I bet he thought they'd all take it like J. Cole and Pusha did and step up.

There's no way Kendrick thought he would create a Jay/Nas, Biggie/Pac type of philosophical/stylistic divide in Hip Hop.

might be right. His team (especially Top) definitely wanted that though. They wanted kendrick to be that dude. His team and his fans seem to be out of step with what kendrick is. Buts thats another discussion.
