My response would be, that has more to do with the reach of the internet. If was a huge deal on the message boards and blogs back then.

There wasn't twitter or Facebook to spread it to the masses of "regular" people, but I was in college in the Midwest at the time and the sites like sohh and okplayer were going crazy about it, but those sites were filled hip hop nerds like I am.
90% of people I knew didn't even have home computers and were still only listening to the radio at that time. If the gatekeepers didn't play it on your local Hot96, people didn't have access to it. Mean while I was playing it on my college radio show for 10 listeners lol

Verse was trash, most overrated thing possibly in hip-hop history. Sean and J Elec both had much better verses. All he did was mention the names of his contemporaries and somehow that was shocking and noteworthy. Not a single other thing about his verse was rememberable
