A qb can't always just throw the ball away. U can't just throw the ball out of bounds when no reciever is in the vicinity. That will be a flag. Also when a pass rusher is up on a qb hella fast , sometimes its better to just protect the ball and take the sack. How many times have u seen an defensive end or blitzing db swipe at the ball when the qb is in the pocket ,forcing a fumble? U gotta know as a qb when u have to just take a sack. thats qb 101 bruh
You're missing the POINT!
It's not about "taking a sack". It's about the original poster saying that being sacked is a good strategy when it really isn't. Of course when there is no other option, you take the sack.
It's like being a fighter pilot and beign advised to hit the eject button at the first sight of danger when you have several OTHER options.
Of course if you're in a tailspin then you should eject. But to call that a strategy is silly.
You're missing what I'm saying. Of course you take the sack when that's your only option. But to tuck the ball as soon as there's a little bit of pressure is ridiculous and can not be called "strategy".
I think back to the play last year where the snap went over Alex's head. Instead of jumping on the ball and "taking the sack" for 10+ yards (as some of you would advocate is brilliant strategy) he picked up the ball, kept his eyes downfield and hit frank gore who was interfered with in the endzone...that play was flagged for defensive PI and the 9ers got the ball on the goal line.
You take the sack if there's no other option. That's a given. However, throwing it away is an even better option...and the best of all is making a play for positive yards.
