Ok now that preseasons over, I see where our defense stands, I'll start with the D-Line:
Isaac Sopoaga: Dude is in his prime now, but I expect him to decline in the next year or two. Extremely strong, finally got his technique down, is a good a nosetackle as any even though he has only been a true nose for a couple of seasons. I thank Jim Tomsula for his guidance.
Grade: A-
Justin Smith: Elite DE, he will be good for another two years at least. Non stop motor. Always a factor arguably our 2nd best defensive player. We are privileged to have him on our team.
Grade: A+
Ian Williams: Solid depth backup, he doesn't have great push at the point of attack but he keeps blowups to a minimum.
Grade: C+
Ray Macdonald: Very solid player that can be a tackle or an end, though I like him as a starting end. Very underrated. So-so speed but he has great strength and a great motor, he's a hard worker and a big part of our great front 7. Considering he was a mid-round draft pick.
Grade: B
Will Tukuafu: I'm not too high on this guy, but the coaches see something in him, so I'll take their word on it. I'd rather sacrifice him for a vet, to be honest though, he has virtually no upside and the most he can be is a 3rd string D-tackle
Grade: D+
Ricky-Jean Francois: Dude lost a lot of weight this offseason which means he must really have a future at D-end, I don't think he talented but he's a hard worker and considering we drafted him at the ass end of the 2009 draft and he's only 25, we can develop him at our pace.
Grade: C
Ikaika Alama-Francis : Maybe he could be good depth player, but I'd rather we sign a better free agent.
Grade: D-
Tony Jerod-Eddie - Maybe a practice squader has good size though
Grade: F
Mather Masifilo: Saw him in college, fairly athletic, I think he'll be in the PS.
Grade D-
