Wait so the Dems I assumed voted for Jefferies so what's the Republican problems.
Yes all the dems voted for Jeffries but the Dems are in the minority so he will be minority leader. The Republicans have the majority so they're supposed to pick the majority house speaker. But he needs 218 votes to win. He can't get them because there are 20 Republicans who are refusing to vote for him (they're currently doing it a 6th time). Without those 20 Republicans, he cannot cross the threshold, no speaker can be chosen, which means that the next session of congress can't start. Many people who were elected into office are still congressmen and women elect, due to there not being a speaker to swear them in.
The dems voting in unison for Jeffries each time is important. If any of the democrats break rank or leave, then that means that the number required for McCarthy to win will decrease. So let's say 2 democrats decide they had enough and they head out of the chamber. Then the number that McCarthy needs to win goes from 218 to 216.
So therefore the democrats remaining in the chamber and voting for Jeffries each time without breaking rank keeps the pressure on Republicans.
If McCarthy can't convince these 20 holdouts (which he can't cause he has met every last single one of their ridiculous demands and they still keep voting against him) then he has 2 options.
Go hat in hand to the democrats and make some concessions to get some of them to vote for him...
or...
Get some of his members to vote "present" instead of voting for a person. But that will be tricky cause if too many vote present, then the number required to win would decrease thereby giving Jeffries a chance to become speaker.
It's a crazy conundrum that MAGAset is in
