nice, looks like this is the real thread

someone correct me if i'm wrong but my read is that the police turned into an oil piracy operation, basically they showed up to gas stations, beat everyone, stole all the gas, then openly resold it for double on the black market. this pissed off enough people that they took up arms against the government, society came to a standstill with nobody being able to drive or work, then young men formed kidnapping/extortion gangs to survive. this pissed off the government elites because it sabotaged their effort to keep the dirty money rolling in and now they're begging for foreign intervention. one thing i don't understand is why so many of the gangs worship russia and sometimes beg for them to intervene.

map from ~3 days ago, i got it from this paper: Gangs of Haiti - Expansion, power and an escalating crisis

@east

That's not an accurate take. The current climate is a culmination of events and decisions that go back at least five years.
There is a thing in our culture about people getting information from word of mouth, even news information. Uncited, unconfirmed, but run with it anyway.

Le Nouvelliste, a newspaper in Haiti, has announced the end of its print publication
Oct 27, 2022

The Haitian newspaper Le Nouvelliste declared the closure of its print edition “until further notice” just over 24 hours after the violent assault on one of its most illustrious journalists, Roberson Alphonse.

The well-known Haitian journalist survived an assassination attempt on Tuesday that left his car riddled with bullets in the capital of Port-au-Prince, officials said.
Roberson Alphonse, who works at the daily newspaper Le Nouvelliste and at radio station Magik9, is hospitalized but is expected to recover, according to Frantz Duval, chief editor for both media. He said Alphonse has undergone two operations so far
The newspaper informed its subscribers, readers, and sponsors in a note that will appear in its final edition this Thursday that it was forced into this “painful obligation” because it was impossible to provide fuel, distribute the newspaper, and use up its last supply of paper.
He stated that “the newspaper’s management has decided to continue publishing the newspaper in an electronic version” in order to preserve the long tradition of Le Nouvelliste and keep the populace informed. On the website lenouvelliste.com and on social media, articles from The Nouvelliste can be read for free

Attempted kidnapping of air traffic controllers in Haiti puts safety of airspace at risk

November 01, 2022

Five civil aviation employees in Haiti were attacked on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, while on their way to work. One of the employees, an air traffic controller, was shot in the leg. The attempted kidnapping of three air traffic controllers over the weekend near the international airport in Port-au-Prince is raising concerns about the safety of the Caribbean country’s airspace.

The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Association, in a statement posted on its website, said it is “gravely concerned” following the armed attack, which took place Saturday afternoon near Toussaint Louverture International Airport while the employees were being transported to work.

Following the incident, which left one air traffic controller with a gunshot wound to the right leg and in need of surgery, Haiti’s National Office of Civil Aviation has been using unqualified and unlicensed individuals to control the country’s skies, said Trish Gilbert, executive vice president for the Americas region of the air traffic controllers’ group.

The independent professional organization, which is based in Montreal, represents more than 50,000 air traffic controllers in 133 countries.
“I get that they don’t know what to do to keep their air traffic controllers safe. But we don’t believe the answer is to just find people who have just never been air traffic controllers or were air traffic controllers 10 years ago and plug them in and have them move airplanes,” said Gilbert. “There has to be a better plan than that.”

Gilbert said she planned to meet with Dominican officials about the concerns. The country, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, has regular flights to Port-au-Prince. She had not yet spoken to the Federal Aviation Administration, which responded to a Miami Herald inquiry by directing the reporter to the State Department’s Level 4 travel advisory and an advisory website for pilots. U.S. carriers American Airlines, Jetblue and Spirit all have regular flights to Haiti.

Gilbert said the association has tried to reach out to Haiti’s civil aviation authority to discuss options, including perhaps moving to a skeletal crew or limiting air traffic to only humanitarian or flights deemed essential. But there has been no response.

The federation "asked the National Office of Civil Aviation (OFNAC) for their immediate and thorough attention to the significant matters involving the safety and security of air traffic control professionals and subsequently the aviation system in Haiti,” the organization said in its statement. “Unfortunately, to date IFATCA has received no response from OFNAC.” Attempts by the Miami Herald to reach the director general of the civil aviation agency, Col. Laurent Dumas, were also unsuccessful

Haiti gang leader ‘Barbecue’ says fuel can start flowing in Haiti

November 06, 2022

The leader of a powerful gang alliance that has spent the past two months blocking the flow of fuel, food and drinking water in poverty-stricken Haiti declared its blockade of the country’s main oil terminal and seaports over Sunday. “The drivers and employees of Terminal Varreux can descend without fear,” gang leader Jimmy Cherizier, the head of the G-9 Family and Allies, said in a video taped message Sunday where he began by giving the date as proof of its authenticity.
A former Haiti National Police officer turned gang leader who goes by the name “Barbecue,” Cherizier said he and his “Revolutionary Forces” have been closely following what’s being said about Haiti and the inability of the country’s political and civil society leaders to come together without “hypocrisy” for the good of the country.
As a result, the alliance has decided to allow fuel to once more flow. “We,” he said, “are asking all truck drivers, and all implicated in the distribution of gas, to take all dispositions to permit fuel to be distributed to pumps.” Since Tuesday, the gang has been locked in a confrontation with specialized units of the Haitian national police, which finally took control of the Varreux terminal on Thursday.
But even as Cherizier’s video message made the rounds Sunday, police were reporting heavy shootings in the area where the terminal is located. A number of gang members have reportedly died or been injured in the gun battle, police sources have said

The reward is being offered under the Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program

That's the only viable option at this point.
Vagabons ruin everything, as usual.....including the chance for the country to stand on its own feet.
