Report: UFC 225 Bombs With Less Than 150,000 PPV Buys

Hey, remember last week when UFC President Dana White sent Alistair Overeem to the UFC 225 preliminary card because WWE import CM Punk was such a huge pay-per-view (PPV) draw and “The Reem” was not?

If not, let me refresh your memory.

“Listen, when Alistair Overeem sells as many pay-per-views as CM Punk does, we can argue,” White told reporters at last week’s UFC 225 media day.

According to a report from the L.A. Times, UFC 225 drew less than 150,000 PPV buys, which puts the Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero-led fight card in the dreaded “Mighty Mouse” category in terms of overall return.

Overeem, meanwhile, had the highest-rated fight on the UFC 225 “Prelims” on FOX Sports 1.

The hulking Dutchman also had the highest-trafficked post right here on MMAmania.com, thanks to a brutal knockout loss to Curtis Blaydes in the third and final round (watch it).

Not to :cape:for punk but this buyrate has more to do with UFC current lack of star power than punk's drawing power he was the opener on the PPV. Hell, I didn't know the show was coming up until Meltzer covered it last week on WOR and I'm actually a fan of MMA :manny:.

I could’ve told you that Punk drawing power died when he got pummeled the first time. He never cut the promos that he’s famous for either, leaving Mike Jackson to sell the fight on Twitter. Punk’s second fight should have been on television, which potentially could have made a difference

I actually thought it was a solid card if not spectacular. Overeem is not someone id pay to watch so I get Dana's apprehension.

That stupid ass reebok deal was the start of this downfall though

Overeem is a big enough name where the young dude that KOed him could have been made a star had it been on ppv tho

Have a PPV in America with only 1 North American in the 2 main fights. Have the most well known fighter on the card fight in the prelims and then wonder why it cannot even hit 200k, let alone 300k which should be a minimum for the PPV fight business.

They going to throw stupid money just to get McGregor to fight again.

Who the fukk would buy a PPV to see Punk fight again after showing he was a complete and utter amateur in his first fight? He was useless after that, beyond maybe getting a few more tickets for the home town crowd to support him. Definitely not PPV buys. Dana going out of his way to say he would cut him and he probably shouldn't even be on PPV to begin with I'm sure didn't help, but such is Dana.

No one fell for the Rebel's scam a 2nd time...the circus of his first fight led to eyes but he was exposed by a guy with a girl's name, so this was gonna happen and well deserved.

I mean punk wasn't going to transform into Brock Lesnar at his age

And the fight showed he wasnt event trained well slow spin kicks leaving his back open... Not knowing how to do a takedown even a high school wrestler knows he needed to shoot at legs and not over rely on the clinch
