It still doesn't sit right with me that these talking heads and former players can just become NBA coaches with no experience.
Go be an assistant coach for a couple of years. Work at the NCAA level. Work your way up.
Just because this guy was on television and played in the NBA somehow makes him qualified to coach an NBA team? And a super high profile team like the Lakers? I don't get it.
Youre right you should learn your apprenticeship. For a former NBA player it really should be no more than 5 years as an assistant. If you really want to be a head coach.
Not saying this is JJ. But in other sports sometimes there are some people whose ideas/vision/philosophy of how to play can only work with high iq talent. Could say Steve Kerr fits this best in recent times. But a lot of the time they dont get to have that luxury because of the talent they do have at their disposal. Just like some coaches are suited better developing younger talent but struggle with seasoned players/vets and Vice Versa.
A lot of coaches follow the same tried and tested blueprint/textbook which they were taught by someone else and don't really adapt/evolve that into their own. That's why you see those former players whove been 10-15 year assistants fail when their get opportunities to be the head coach for the first time when they are already into their late 40's early 50's. I would exclude someone like Chris Finch while he was an assistant for 10 years he also had 12 years being a head coach prior to being in the NBA. And sometime an assistant is only good enough to be an assistant.
