I am not a fan of hiring someone with zero experience, it's disrespectful to others looking for the job as well. Guys like Sam Cassell who have put in the work. JJ should spend a few years being assistant coach to be taken seriously. He eventually will get one regardless because he's been applying for coaching position for a while now, GM too.
Bird and Zeke did well with the Pacers.
Jason Kidd figured it out over time.
NBA don't have genius coaching anymore. Rule changes made Popovich, Dantoni, Phil Jackson, Eric Spolestra, Pat Riley, Kerr etc obsolete. However, NBA been allowing defense/physicality last several months...so coaching is coming back into play.
But majority of teams play the same and the superstars are the difference makers. Coach manges clock, momentum and minutes.
Coaches draw up some inbounds plays and... ask for screens etc....tell go over/under screens...tell who to trap. That's about it.
