The black family is not shallow.

The expectation that love, which transcends time and space, should be halted because of race, is shallow. Come on now, we're adults.

How does this pertain to RL whose money has sent countless black kids to college for free and has seeded countless black entrepreneurial ventures?

Is this a joke? Go through the black billionaires list and count for yourself.

If this was the case with RL, Loida would've been white.

You all go on and on about black wealth being trickled down as if there is an ecosystem in place for that to happen.

It's not.

Wealth doesn't circulate within the black community. It hasn't since the 1960's.

Y'all just sound angry with your fist raised to the clouds at this point.

You all can disrespect the likes of Frederick Douglas, Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Adam Clayton Powell, Nina Simone, Marcus Garvey, Henry Lewis Gates, Jack Johnson, George Schuyler or anyone else that had a white spouse.

I'm not doing it.

But you all would support someone like Umar Johnson who champions his black queens..............but is not married to a single one.

And yet he still honors Frederick Douglass and Marcus Garvey...btw.

Marcus Garvey spouse was biracial, Marcus Garvey would not have the following he did if his wife was white, neither would Malcolm.

If we cared so much about the black family, 72% of black children would not be born to single mothers.

Let's worry about the 99% before we focus our attention on the 1%.

It's Ego.

What’s up with the rounding up to 99% :dead:

Boys really gonna sit here and play stupid like they don’t understand the irony of an Asian woman with some 25% black grandkids talking about the importance of identifying as African American :dead:

I think the bigger issue is the changing role of the Black elite and ideas of legitimacy in the Black (and other) communities. I read an article a few years back about how many very rich people surveyed felt they had more in common with other rich people, regardless of race/ethnicity/nationality etc., than with the middle or poorer classes of their ethnicity.

I'm so glad you brought this up and I appreciate your analysis as a whole, really on point on every detail . I think we have been hardwired to see the wins of individual Black ppl/families as wins for us all, but that's not really accurate, especially today. The community has adopted the tenets of individualism and symbolic wins take on more heft than they should.

We cannot rely on the richest among us to make decisions that positively push us forward outside of representation politics and I think we're getting that picture slowly but surely.

Above the fray.
Oh, he was a shoo-in for sure. All it took was LOG to have his Westchester J&J and Links mother to put the word in with her Manhattan J&J and Links sisters and it was a done deal. All they needed to hear was billionaire nupe from VSU and Harvard who lives in the UES and has a sprawling cottage in Amagansett, East Hampton and they were bringing out the welcome mat to Loida so they can have their next J&J event on their private beach. :pachaha:

You know Loida is a member of the Links, too.
Hehehe.
If she didn't get in that way, she would have been grandfathered in by blood connections to this guy.

His point about Dr Umar is pretty clear. He's saying that people are just paying lip service to caring about Black marriage.

Reginald Lewis gets criticized for not having a Black wife. Dr. Johnson avoids criticism for not having a Black wife, even though he has children and "promotes" Black family/marriage etc.

For real, Black Filipino relations go back far, to when the US conquered them in the Spanish-American War. During the brutal counterinsurgency America conducted against Filipino freedom fighters who wanted independence, a bunch of Black soldiers switched sides rather than participate in the atrocities. Many married Filipinas and stayed (though a bunch were eventually killed during the Japanese occupation) so regular Filipinos had a good impression of Black folks from the jump.

Thurgood Marshall's second wife was Filipina and I have a relative that married a Filipina in the 1970s in Cali. Filipinas are actually the second highest nationality of women born abroad to marry/have kids with Black men after Mexican women even though their population is much smaller proportionally than Mexican women.

@ab.aspectus @DrBanneker

Last week, when this thread was active, this was one of the things that Lewis' widow was devoting their resources and networks towards. 30 years after his passing.

While dudes were making comments about Loida's appearance.

I mean, most of the petty crowd probably haven't donated $20 to UNCF so yeah, I feel you.

What's real funny is if the Lewis daughters had been vocal about "I'm mixed not Black" some of the same people would have still been in their feelings so there is no win here unfortunately.

I think mixed people are black but I can't rock with them calling themselves pro-black or constantly trying to "use" their blackness when they have non-black partners. Like Zendaya or Zoe Saldana, or Megan Markle
they're black when it's convenient for them but we know where their allegiance really is :mjpls:

We agree on the bolded. What I will say that is different is that neither Zendaya, Zoe, or Megan have done anything directly for Black folks outside of "representation" so I would actually lean closer to your stance when certain people are mentioned.

The Lewis family has continued to give to Black causes. I don't know if that is required by Reginald Lewis' trust or not but if they were just stunting on the Gram with his money and not doing a thing for uplift I probably wouldn't cape either.

At what point do you stop calling them black?

Are those 1/4 black grandkids still black?

It depends. If they identify as black, have black spouses, were raised around black people and use what wealth or skills they have to contribute to the black community then I don't see why not.
