Tulsans took part in red carpet interviews Tuesday prior to a premiere of the documentary series “Rebuilding Black Wall Street.”

Chairs were packed at Greenwood Cultural Center, where the first episode of the series was screened for an audience that included many Tulsans who will appear in the series

“Rebuilding Black Wall Street” will premiere 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). A description for the Morris Chestnut-hosted series said “Rebuilding Black Wall Street” will explore the enduring impact of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and shed light on the remarkable resilience of the community as it rebuilds over a century later.

The premiere episode drew applause from the crowd. The premiere spotlighted Tulsa Race Massacre descendant Montika Collins’ mission to create North Tulsa’s only natural birthing center and to return the tradition of midwifery to the Greenwood District. Each of the series’ six episodes will focus on a different subject.

Executive producers Ri-Karlo Handy and Karra Duncan (who is from Tulsa) were present for the premiere.
