I think before the pistons the last team to reach the NBA finals without a "franchise changer" or extremely valuable piece was the 98-99 Knicks. The Nets had Kidd which changed that franchise around...I can't think of anyone else off the top.
So this is where @Blackthoughts is going to have a tough time explaining this. The Knicks were playing in a pathetic eastern conference, Allan Houston and Latrell Sprewell caught fire and they were playing the best team basketball in the NBA. They get to the finals and what happens? They get their shyt pushed in by the spurs because they had a franchise player in Tim Duncan. Now top to bottom? That Knicks squad all around was probably as talented as anyone in the league at that time, but no game changer. Thus a 4-1 easy series win for the spurs.
We could do this all day, you will never win or convince many to have the same view as you do.

if the Grizzlies made it to the finals over OKC. There's no guarantee that Miami will make it to the finals and if they don't then it's open season. We'll see soon who the knows what they're talking about. I think if you have multiple allstar caliber players that are committed to defense then you can get to the conference finals or the actual finals.
at only 6 teams being represented in this years ASG.
