This just hit me 2 weeks ago. My boy is 4 and the wiz is pregnant with our 2nd due in March. I don't watch television outside of Jeapordy, some history and a maybe a few other programs. My boy loves site words videos and we have him on some STEM dvds. Now he is starting to get into the Marvel/D.C. thing. Taking an interest in his education is cool, I get to do shyt my parents never did with us. Before I allow him to watch certain programming (anything outside of education) I have him read along a page or 2 with me. I started this 2 weeks ago and I believe it can be beneficial. I thought I'd share this to exchange ideas with other parents. Please add on if you do something similar

Don’t have kids yet but my aunt/uncle used to do this w/my lil cousin. She 18 now and she’s pretty smart

It’s a good idea. Nas is a good example.

Personally I wasn’t the best student on paper but I was able to finesse my knowledge into a decent paying job after college.

Had Nikkas like “How tf he get a job like that I thought he was stupid:gucci::pacspit:

I’m back like:mjgrin:. It’s bc I read a lot as a youngin and even now

Above the fray.
This is a tip for uncles or people who watch kids from time to time. Parents can use it too.

If the children are watching something for the second time, or 3x,etc

turn the closed captioning on, so that they can see the words that they've already heard.

Only on a big screen tv where the captioning doesn't block the picture...and only on a program that they've seen before.
Helps them become aware/familiar with how words are spelled.

my oldest son is 4 and my youngest son is 5 months so i'm kinda in the same boat as u OP....my son is just one of those naturally smart kids...his preK teachers suggested to enter him into the gifted/talented school of arts so he took the test and my wife and I are waitin for those results....

i've been readin to him since the age of 1 and he grasps the basic concepts of pronouncing words..identifying objects with their names...the correct spelling of words etc....I don't know bout anyone else but i love intelligent kids...not know-it-alls but kids who articulate well at that young age...u can tell they will be alright in the near future....my son watches a lot of educational shows on tv and his devices (cell/tablet)...long as you monitor what ya kid watches they will head in the right direction...

oh yea...give them a homework assignment to do everynight...whether the preK makes them or not..

My son watches a lot of T.V.. I'll admit. He's 17 months though but he has his own IPad and knows how to use it to open kids YouTube and endless alphabet. He also gets out a lot and we read to him every day as well. I have watched every show he watches and pre select what he want we him to be entertained by.
He is with me pretty much 24 hrs of the day since his mom went back to work after his 3rd month.
Being that he is my seed, all the way down to being left handed like his pops, I know it's likely he'll be a visual learner like I am. I've been looking at Montessori schools to encourage different methods of learning and leaning towards what could be his strengths when he gets older.
I've invested a lot into solidifying his future and I can't wait to see what's the future brings :blessed:

I was deemed one of those talented kids in Kindergarten and stayed the path until I got that first smart phone in middle school :wow: became a lazy fukk after wards

Key takeaway: wean how much technology your kid uses or he’ll have damn near an ADD attention span like the rest of my generation

I used to watch (and record) the National Spelling Bee.

If a Black contestant made it to the televised part...I'd cue it to show it to the kids if they were here. Just so they could see people who look like them doing different things

though, to keep it 100
I'd just show them the part of the Black contestant getting the words correct.

I'd turn it off before the Black kid took the L & the Indian kid would win.

F that......I now know why they erased the footage of Jack Johnson knocking the Great White Hope out .

OP, I'm into Jeopardy as well...when the Black kids win the teen tourney, my nephews can watch...otherwise NO GO!!!!!

heheheh
