As the world saw on Tuesday, WWE RAW 1000 saw some major ratings for the historic event. The show averaged about 6 million viewers and was the most watched Raw in years. Clearly, all the hype and build was a success. The company made sure everybody tuned in for July 23rd, and they did. Simple, yet effective! However, now the quarter hour viewership figures are out. Let's take a look!
The DX opening segment for the "new" first hour started with 5.58 million viewers. Clearly, that is WAY above the typical opening quarter hour for a three hour Raw. WWE announced DX to begin a week in advance, and viewers remembered. The show was off to a great start!
The continuation of the DX segment gained 27,000 viewers for the next quarter hour. Thus, they were up to 5.6 million viewers. As most saw, the segment did run very long. Thus, they bled into the next quarter hour, and the numbers show that. In any event, major props to everybody involved here...
Rey Mysterio, Sin Cara and Sheamus vs. Dolph Ziggler, Chris Jericho and Alberto Del Rio, plus the first Charlie Sheen interview lost 395,000 viewers. That was expected. A lot of fans saw the DX reunion and turned away. Also, a big six man tag team match just SCREAMS filler to me. Everybody did a fine job, the viewership loss is not a big surprise at all.
Brodus Clay vs. Jack Swagger, plus the Legends backstage with AJ and Layla gained 326,000 viewers. There you go! Everybody that left for the previous quarter hour all came back here. As mentioned before, the Funky Crew has done a nice job in ratings more often that not. Plus, who doesn't love Mae Young and her "hand?" Maybe Mark Henry should get a paternity test? Just saying folks! For those keeping count, WWE Raw was back up to just under 5.4 million viewers at this point.
The AJ/Daniel Bryan wedding gained 616,000 viewers for a 3.91 rating. That is a very nice gain. Also of note, this segment began the top of the next hour (which is usually the beginning of Raw). Thus, you had to expect a huge flock of people turning on the USA Network. Clearly, wedding draws in wrestling - always have, always will. Both did a fine job with Slick out there, and we got the pay off of AJ leaving Bryan to become the new Raw GM. Interesting...
The Rock coming out to interact with Bryan and CM Punk gained another 575,000 viewers for a 4.3 rating. Wow! Such large gains here being seen by the company with the big Rocky appearance. All three men entertained, and the huge rating is well deserved. At this point, over 6.7 million people were watching Raw.
Christian vs. The Miz lost 895,000 viewers. As we all saw, we were given a new Intercontinental Champion during this. I liked the match, but "wrestling" does not draw in the masses. Some fans may not be able to accept that, but that is life. The two had no story line, just a quality back and forth battle. Viewership plummeted, and nobody should be shocked. After this, their viewership was down to 5.8 million.
The Triple H/Brock Lesnar segment gained 334,000 viewers. For those paying attention, this was at the top of the third and final hour. As always, the top of the hour almost always sees a nice increase. I enjoyed this promo battle, and we finally got confirmation on Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H at Summerslam. Plus, Stephanie McMahon looked great!
The continuation of this segment gained another 90,000 viewers. That is the plus side of some segments running long. They carry over for a decent amount of time, so viewers can't tune out until a commercial break. It will be intriguing to see what Brock and Triple H do for the next month on Raw.
Heath Slater vs. Lita gained another 25,000 viewers for a 4.0 quarter hour. I enjoyed this story line the past month. A lot of legends returned, got a payday, received some nice publicity, and we saw the pay off here. Of course, seeing Lita is always fine with me. I do wonder what Slater does going forward. As long as he keeps getting beat up, I will enjoy it! For those still keeping track, Raw was up to nearly 6.3 million viewers at the time.
The Undertaker's return with Kane gained another 293,000 viewers. This was a surprise to me, as I thought viewers would tune out right before returning for the main event. Plus, nobody knew Taker was coming back. He was not announced, so the casual viewers out there had no idea what was coming. Lucky for WWE, people stuck around and saw the Brothers of Destruction beat up some lower card talents for a nice moment. A "report" said that Paul Bearer was set to come out as well here, but a traveling conflict prevented him from being in St. Louis. That is too bad! I would have loved to see those three posing together on Raw one more time. In any event, 6.6 million viewers saw that segment.
Now to the main event of John Cena vs. CM Punk for the WWE Championship! Last week, I predicted this overrun could earn 7 million viewers, if they played their cards right. Well, I was close! The main event gained another 389,000 viewers for a 4.43 overrun rating. To close out Raw, 6,965,000 viewers were watching. Just under 7 million people saw Punk turn heel to end RAW 1000 on Monday night.
