People saying this doesn't matter are clueless.
These leagues are selling a product. TV ratings show how many people are buying that product.
NBA isn't selling well--NCAA tournament games outdrew NBA Finals games last year.
America loves watching sports; America loves watching basketball; America doesn't love the NBA.
You got a Play-In Tournament and an In-Season Tournament because of this calculus.
NFL meanwhile could be thinking of starting a developmental league in the spring to cut into the available eyes watching the NBA playoffs--that now might look like a market that is 'settling' for NBA basketball because it's all that's on. These Christmas ratings show that, when it's the NBA's showcase going head to head against football with very little actual playoff implications--so a tit for tat, regular season equivalent--the NFL outdraws it, what, 5 or 6 to 1?
This type of math has a direct impact on what NFL programing you will see cutting int springtime in the near future.

I'm still surprised the NFL decided to Debo Christmas from the NBA. I always thought there was more of an understanding between to the main American sports leagues to not step on each other.
Think it was more about taking advantage of Christmas landing on one of their regular gamedays (THU-MON). Christmas 2024 is on a Wednesday, Silver will get to breathe for a year

That's true but here's what else is true on The Coli. The 49ers-Ravens thread has 10x more replies than the Celtics-Lakers thread. I watched both games obviously but all that "football is for cacs" talk don't work if you go by the interest of these boards.
No dog in this fight but thecoli is predominantly cacs.

As a fan of both leagues I could give a shyt who wins this ratings war. Honestly not sure why it even matters.

NFL stans still celebrating because middle aged white boomers like football more than basketball. :mjlol:
NBA died today on the hill of individuals rather than the actual sport

Football can have west Kentucky st vs. eastern northern tenn

And compete draw higher 🐁 ngs against any NBA regular season game

Point is .

Nba markets players then the sport

It doesn't :manny:

The NBA is still getting $50B-$75B on its next rights deal.

Ratings not equal to the NFL does not mean the NBA is doing poorly. No matter how many times yall keep typing it, lol.

Enjoy both.

It's not about "enjoying" both, it's about appreciating the meta game at play, and how it affects the things you enjoy.
You are adopting a "what's good for the goose is good for the gander" philosophy here, just assuming that the NBA "getting" billions is good for the league... but those broadcast contracts are 2 way streets, and the "buyers" here will have a good amount of creative control.
They're essentially buying the right to package and promote "the NBA product", whatever that may be.
If the NFL is drawing 6:1 viewership numbers in the same time slot with the same level of product (regular season, minimal playoff implications), the broadcast platforms buying the NBA rights are going to want to eat into those numbers.
Advertising alone won't get that done--the fundamental nature of the product being sold will be altered in some way.
When you factor in other numbers that show the NCAA mens tournament outdraws the NBA playoffs, you start to see a picture emerging: the American consumer prefers fewer regular season games, and more playoff-level intensity games--ie, single elimination contests.
NBA is going to have to find a way to ratchet up the stakes.

And the result is that the NBA is a far more global and popular sport worldwide.

NFL is irrelevant outside of white America.
