I hope that I don't get cooked for this. But if nothing - I am truthful. I have never listened to Aretha Franklin. :skip:
I know who she is, I know singers have sang cover versions of her songs, buttttt.. the only song that I heard her sing directly is "Respect".
edit- I'm going to just go ahead and get this out the way- ":mjpls:and :patrice:" sigghhhhh.

:beli:No- I've heard the song itself from other singers, but not her directly. I don't know what else to tell you, I mean, you heard Aretha sing bc of our parents and grandparents right?- it's not like people in our age demographic have Aretha songs downloaded on playlists.

What? You're really going to say that you know Aretha songs to that extent?? Outside of 90s-2000s (and present) era of singers, I wouldn't know bc the older generation of singers were not heavily played my household. My mom mainly listened to Gospel or 70s era dance/disco music, my dad - it was either Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations.. etc. I've heard Patti Labelle, Dionne Warwick.. just not Aretha.

True, but sometimes our parents turn us on to stuff we like. Jackson 5 was before my time too, didn't stop me as a kid from being like

To this day, her opening riff on Giving Him Something He Can Feel baffles me. I've tried over and over again to mimick that run. That shyt is ridiculously hard. Her vocals are sublime. No flaw whatsoever. Has mastered all genres in an era where being a black woman meant you were at the bottom of the totem pole of society.
RESPECT is considered a rock song and a pop song believe it or not. That shyt went #1.
She mastered the pop genre
Gospel genre
R&B
Disco
Think she had a few country songs that charted.

What couldn't she do. Played the piano. Smoked cigarettes and still was killing nikkas with the vocals. Sang at an event honoring Obama and brought that man to tears.

Set the standard for Whitney and Mariah. Your favorite singers favorite singer. The only one who I'd put above Whitney. She'll never be touched.

The perfect voice. You know you a legend when nikkas can just say your 1st name and only one person comes to mind.
Aretha:wow:

I watched her wow a white audience in the 60's with her piano mastery while blowing the house down with the vocals. Had them white men looking like :picard::merchant:
