They offered me a scholarship that I didn't take advantage of, because it wasn't the major I wanted at the time. Was a solid program too, that puts you on track for a Masters with a good start salary.

I went here, I'll always love my school. Haven't been to Tally in a while though, need to go to homecoming this year.

10/10 my only regret was not being able to graduate from there. Had to transfer back home to help my family as my mother fell ill. Drastically changed the course of my life as I never intended to return to Orlando again.

ATL to MEM
FAMU probably has just as many or more grads than the AUC in Atlanta. FAMU has a ton of pull in Atlanta. Top notch engineering & education schools..guaranteed you’ll see every school in metro Atlanta with 1-4 teachers who graduated from FAMU.

I was all about FAMU my 10th & 11th grade year. I just knew I’d be In Tallahassee after high school cause both of my band directors were FAMU grads. We played all their music & mimicked their style. Their audition requirements were ridiculous though & I had discovered the SWAC, Alabama State, Southern & Jackson State my senior year & I never thought about another MEAC school again.

Their out of state tuition is high as hell, but other than that I don’t have any thing negative to say about FAM.

What were their audition requirements? With north of 300 people in their bands there is no way they could have held that high of a standard. I usually found that once you get above 100 kids in a band only about 40% can actually play decently.

The usual know all scales & chromatic scale, play a prepared piece, be able to sight read and they had another piece they wanted you to play that they sent you ahead of time. This was damn near 20 years ago but I just remember thinking their requirements seemed like they were trying to do a little too extra..this was before Robert Champion had died & they still had that reputation of being the best of the best.

My high school director was old & he didn’t do any arranging for us. He was a fam grad and cool with Mr. Searjent down there, & we literally played all of their music with no modifications. Their music was simple as hell and I was thinking why tf do they require so much for an audition when they play this simple ass music? It was probably to weed out those who really wanted to be there. I probably just got too much in my head, but at that point I was determined to go to a SWAC school anyways so I never bothered going to Tallahassee to audition.

Not to say other colleges had lesser requirements, but I just wasn’t feeling FAMU’s. My HS director had got me a lot of material to prepare for any audition & he gave me lessons throughout the year on the weekends. I would have gotten a scholarship down there if I wanted to but like I said I was set on Bama State, Southern or Jackson.

When I was marching for Bama State in 08 we went to Bragg Stadium & played them. They were still over 300+, and as we watched them do their pregame & halftime show, half the band didn’t even know what the fukk they were supposed to be doing :mjlol: that day definitely killed any FAMU mystique all of us had. They were loud as hell though but they played in pocket. If they were aggressive back then & played an updated book with those numbers it would have been a wrap for every other HBCU band they came across :whew:

FAMU used to have the cheat code. Their band alumni is DEEP AF. I used to mess around with a chick who was deep into it and they used to have old band members who’d come back or they’d snatch up Black kids from FSU who didn’t participate in band. That’s how that shyt was 300+

But I remember being a jit, skipping school and kicking it in campus with the homies (RIP Los and KC). Our man Cudda was on the baseball squad (later went on to become a scout for the Braves and Orioles). Fridays on the Set was a gotdamn movie. Got cool with a cat who used to be out there shooting footage and come to find out, he and some other communications students ran the schools public access show that basically showed off life on campus. nikka used to get passes for all the events down in Daytona, Freaknik, Orange Crush, Players Ball, PCB Spring Break, etc. My youth :to:
