Many like sd more than la

It's just like people who like Oakland over LA, though. Oakland ain't a more complete, greater city than LA, but its characteristics appeal to certain people...

People have definitely said it can be boring and in comparison to LA its slower. Liking somewhere more than somewhere else doesn't mean it's better. I prefer Buffalo to New York City and have known other people who do too, but Buff ain't a "better" city, all things considered...

Never been but off the strength of the history, food, and 8ball & MJG imma give it a 7 :ehh:

I remember the radio stations there used to play more local artists than national artists, it was really unique. MemphisRap.com used to be a go to for me. And my favorite Memphis rapper back then was Tela, then Yo Gotti...

I lived there in the 2002-03 school year, and at that time Gotti was just getting burn. Nobody outside of Memphis knew who dude was in '03, so around '06 or so when I heard him getting national burn I was like "I remember dude!" Lol...

I used to fukk with Memphis and Tennessee rap really heavy in 8th grade and early high school. Probably the first regional sound I appreciated, and of course living there you heard alota old greats like Al Green, Isaac Hayes, etc. This was 16-17 years ago and my tastes have matured since, so I'm not the biggest fan of Memphis and Tennessee hip hop anymore but I still appreciate it and some things bring back nostalgia...

Why did I assume San Diego would be one of the bottom feeders?

i was all the way wrong.
San Diego gets nothing but love from lots of people. Rarely hear anything bad about the city. It's got the same weather and women as LA at a cheaper price I assume. All without the glitz and glamour of Hollywood which is what makes LA expensive.

Far as Memphis is concerned, it seems like a cool place to visit with good food and music history. Hear the crime is bad but I assume that's only in certain neighborhoods. Would like to go visit sometime for a short trip.

My beautiful hometown!
+You can eat really good and it's cheap!
-You can eat really good and get fat (We go toe-to-toe with Houston for the fattest city in the nation!)
+Cost of living is very affordable...your dollar will stretch (Home Ownership is too easy if your finances are right)
-There are still pockets of our folks who think they can't do better, People need to think forward
+Modern shopping areas (Crosstown Concourse, Tangier Outlets, Avenue at Carriage Crossing, IKEA, etc) and access to 3 states (TN, MS, AR) where shopping is cheap.
-It's not as high end like Atlanta but most folks are just happy to chill and have a drink with ya!
+If you have conservative values, plenty of churches and social groups to meet up and fellowship with. Real Memphis folk are pretty easy-going...
-The younger generation can be knuckleheads and do the dumbest things, but we know the apples don't fall far from the tree.

Random thoughts:
  • We are the (blue)red-headed stepchild of the state...TN government don't care about the city as much as they should because we're a dominant Black city.
  • But that Black History has roots so deep in Memphis, every black American should visit it at least once in their lifetime.
  • We are Southern, and damn proud of it! Memphis is like a large small town.
  • There are people with manners and if you're around good folks, you can we the welcoming spirit we have here.
  • The non-black folks are more ratchet than the black folks, especially the ones in the city! (Country ass Vietnamese, Nutbush snowbunnies, etc.)
  • Midtown Memphis cool if you know where to hang out, the liberal crowds are usually tame and keep to themselves.
  • Blues, Basketball, and BBQ is the lifeblood of city...we're going thru a renaissance that Memphis is slowly and quietly improving the quality of life in the city.
  • You can walk into any bar downtown/midtown and not hear live music...Music history is rich here
  • People fear what they don't know...just use common street sense and you'll be fine, especially if you grew up black.
  • Let Atlanta and Nashville have all the lights, Memphis prefers to be laidback.
  • Plenty of Jobs if you are educated and work in the right fields.
No city is perfect but Memphis is a real American city with character and what you see is what you get! People from out of town enjoy it enough so it just depends on your lifestyle.

You on point can definitely tell you used to live Memphis. Three 6 Mafia and Project was hot around that time. Banger after banger:whew: Yo Gotti was that shyt too. Add in some La Chat, Frayser Boy, and Lil Whyte

I stayed in North Memphis and Frayser during them years

I can't image what the clubs was like when 3 6 played

Lived across the river my sophomore year in high school and go back cause my daughter lives there but…

Pros
- real chill
- best bbq in the world. fukk Texas, fukk NC, KC is cool
- Gus’s :noah: and the dry spice wings at Central
- there (and you really gotta look for them) is a segment of upward bound black folks who don’t have their nose up in the sky
- down ass folks…my folks stay off in Blackhaven, Westwood, and Trigg. Seen plenty of first 48 trucks but ain’t never had a issue with anybody when I come round. Been to plenty of hole in the wall, one way in, one way out joints and it’s all about having a good time. Drankin some brews and vibin to blues or Memphis rap shyt. Sometimes warranted but the town gets a bad rap
- hood rats who got some education yet moved to Cordova and Germantown. Matter fact, anything East of Shelby Farms. If you know you know

Cons
- hood rats. Particularly if they got any kinda bright ass colored hair. p*ssy and mouth may be fire, but she is setting you up. Also, Memphis leads the country in hoes still rockin finger waves. It’s like they never got the memo
- them nikkas can’t drive for shyt. 6 outta 10 vehicles have some type of damage cause they don’t know how to drive AND they still drive slabs, cutlass, and any other car made out of metal that’s on its last leg....that leads to…
- fukked up roads. I get a river runs thru that mf but gotdamn. Roads will fukk your suspension all the way up. And it took like like 15 years to build the 40/240/Sam Cooper
- the food is so good you can’t help but be obese
- cac have raised midtown. fukked up the city wasn’t willing to fix it up for long time residents

all in all, if it wasn’t for the ungodly hot weather, I’d move there. My homegirl tried to get me to take this gig with Corps of Engineers there but even tho my child lives there, ain’t no way I could live in that city. Folks say move to Southaven but then nikkas just as crazy. I’d have to live out somewhere like millington or something. I give it a soft 8

Must be a southern thang, cuz I definitely put history, culture, character, and identity when ranking these cities over glitz and glamour any day, especially as an AADOS. That's why I think we(h town), beat dallas for instance despite their infrastructure being more polished(to me that just looks like gentrification).

I'd just travel to dubai or doha or something if I wanted a superficial overpriced ritzy experience.

And I think everyone agree that economic opportunity and stability is important as well.

Uhh nah breh lol, we ain't on the top 20 on that list. Trust me I checked.

We 31 or something. Still ain't good though.

The food is still fire. If you ain't had Houston creole, Texas soul, and SETX bbq you missing out.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with everything you said especially with the county Vietnamese/Asian thing. I remember going to a soul food spot in midtown a year or so ago and there was this Vietnamese cat speaking like a dude straight out of south Memphis. Talking about some.

“we got to preserve our culture bruh:ufdup:

literally had me like:wtf::wtf::wtf:

:ufdup:Straight slander.

Memphis bbq is fire no doubt.

But, SETX bbq bout more diverse than anywhere in the country. We got all the typical southern bbq items, plus the beef ribs, chopped beef, smoked boudain, grease-beef balls, muddy-water sausage(Houston specific), smoke crabs(beaumont specific) courtesy of the TX cowboy and Louisiana creole traditions.
