Weird show. Usually in anime you dread long flashbacks and want the current storyline to progress. In Gungrave the flashback is the best part and the second half mostly sucks.
Like other have said Gungrave goes downhill once it turns characters you respect into deformed monsters that goes against everything they stand for and doesn’t even make them stronger relative to Brandon.
Bear Walken for a while was the best designed black character I ever saw in anime. Nobody treated him like he was an oddity. Commanded respect from everyone. One of the highest ranking members in the organization. then he turns into some weird ass arrancar with white hands that gets destroyed by Brandon and all of that respect is lost. Not a fan of how characters outside of Harry and Brandon were treated in the second half.
I did like the theme of how the pursuit of power will corrupt even the tightest loyalties overtime. Though you hate Harry for his greed, he does turn into a sympathetic figure in the end when he loses everything he worked so hard to secure and is overthrown. The scene when his wife gets killed is especially humanizing when you see how much he cared for another person outside of himself. The way he and Brandon are handled is good.
Ending OST is one of my favorites too
First half is a 8, second half a 6. Ending being good saves it from being worse than that. Giving it a 7
