No I mean the show itself was a lot different and way more violent and I think kenshin was different, actually now that I remember he was different at first.

I thought x was a prequel to kenshin? Or am I thinking of something else?
Ok I understand what you were asking now. Yes it was a prequel. He was Battosai during that time and because of those he switched to the Kenshin that is shown in the series.

I agree with what you said which is why I think they should have their own list. Just like Kenshin, DBZ has movies that would I think we all rank higher than the series. I think it just doesn't make sense to rank movies but exclude some because they also had series.

Trust & Betrayal (kenshin's backstory) is a 4 episode OVA, so though it's presented like a movie it's really just an extension of the TV anime. There's another one called Reflections that's an alternate ending to the manga that I thought was great, and I just include it in my overall thoughts on the franchise.

Problem with making a seperate list is that we won't be able to completely separate the films from the TV series. For instance we know who Goku is because of the TV series. The movie doesn't have to spend an hour giving character backgrounds because it's expected that viewer has already seen DBZ going in. If the TV anime didn't exist and we only had the movie to go on, it wouldn't be as good.

What happened in the ending again?

I only saw the anime.

I remember kenshin beating the bandage dude, was it different In the manga, and what happened in the alternate ending?

before any of these spoilers, if you want to read what happens post anime the manga picks up on chapter 147, and this OVA shows the alternate ending

Kenshin learns to forgive himself for his past as a killer and finally overcomes his PTSD. Gets married to Kaoru and they have a kid. He gives Yahiko his sword and he becomes his successor. Sanosuke says goodbye and travels abroad. I think he got married to the doctor girl or at least it's hinted they have a relationship. All of Kenshin's rivals have moved forward in their lives. Happy ending for everyone involved.

In the alternate ending Kenshin never forgives himself for being a murderer. He's haunted by PTSD, his body is worn down from a life dedicated to fighting, and after the war ends he struggles to find a use for himself when the only thing he's ever known is how to swing a sword. So he wanders about Japan alone searching for a purpose leaving Kaoru and his son behind for months on end while she just sits there waiting for him to return sharing his pain.

Kenshin -

Kaoru -

totally unrecognizable from what we see of them in the anime.

Meanwhile Kenshin's friends notice he's dead inside and try to rescue him from depression.

that's his greatest rival realizing that Kenshin is a shell of himself and trying to help him in whatever way he can, as a friend. Doesn't work.

Lots of years pass and Kenshin gets an incurable disease that is contagious. Kaoru has dedicated her life to Kenshin, wants to die with him, contracts the disease and they both die in the end leaving their child behind.

A lot of people don't like the ending. But I think it's more realistic to the post war experiences of samurai and war veterans who don't get happy conclusions and spend the rest of their lives in misery.

So the anime from toonami and the manga have the same ending? So the good ending is canon?

Is the alternate ending from the samurai x show or another show?

I think I do remember watching the alternate ending before. But that of course isn’t canon right?

so did he get sick because he never forgave himself? So if he had forgiven himself he’d be ok and that would be the happy ending?

The anime from toonami never completed the manga story. So we never get to see the good ending animated.

The alternate ending was released as a OVA, which is basically a bonus episode that often comes with the DVD purchase of an anime. Some of it actually is canon - there's a part involving a villain who kidnaps Kaoru that was not shown in the original anime - but everything else is not.

It isn't really explained how Kenshin contracted the disease, but we can assume that it's from him not taking care of himself (not eating, not bathing, not resting) and traveling so much. The implication is that if he decided to settle down with his family and allowed others to help him he wouldn't have gotten the illness to begin with.

Okay I’m down with movies being it’s own separate thing for this series.

Now the question is how many? Can’t overdue it.

For real? I thought that the show was over after he beat that dude.

How much longer is the manga after that? Is there another final main villain after the bandaged dude?

Pretty long. The story is about 60% done where the manga ends.

There is another main boss at the end. Someone related to Kenshin's 1st wife

It would go 50 deep if you were taking recommendations. Huge field to choose from if isolating films from the original series.

Updated with Baki score (8.40) placing it in the top 10 (7th overall).

Sidenote I’m doing 8 anime movies. That means I’m not pacing myself like I did for the last couple of animes. It’s straight mainstream high name animes for awhile.

long story short we’re about to enter the “meat” of this series.
