A federal grand jury indictment unsealed Tuesday named a dozen members of the gang who face decades in prison if convicted of organized crime under the RICO statute. Tuesday's indictment brings the total number of Seven Mile Bloods gang members indicted to 15.
The 51-page federal complaint also offers the public a glimpse of the inner-workings of Detroit street gangs.
The indictment tells a tale of turf wars, revenge killings, colors, code words, social media puffery, intertwined rap music and complex drug-dealing operations that span well beyond Detroit.
The Seven Mile Bloods operate in a section of east Detroit they've dubbed the Red Zone, mostly located in the 48205 Zip Code, also referred to as "4-8-2-0-Die" be members, according to the indictment.
The Seven Mile Bloods is comprised of mostly "older individuals" but also affiliates with the Hobsquad or SMB Juniors, juvenile and school-age gang members from the neighborhoods.
They use a five-pointed star or crown to symbolize gang affiliation and the Seven Mile Bloods' membership in a larger Chicago-based national gang alliance called People's Nation that includes the Latin Kings, Bloods, Vice Lords and the Latin Counts. They primarily wear red and are at odds with Folk Nation, another gang alliance that includes the Gangster Disciples and Crips, the federal indictment says.
The sale of codeine, heroin, prescription pills, cocaine and marijuana out of abandoned houses known as "trap houses" and in other states, including Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia and other states provide the gang income, federal investigators say.
The Seven Mile Bloods, based in part on a killing by gang members in 2014, are amid an active gang war with other east side gangs.
"Since July 2014, these rivals are violently attacking one another and have posted respective 'hit lists' on social media," the indictment says.
Federal agents used a history of prior arrests, mostly for drug and firearm possession; social media posts; intercepted text messages and rap lyrics to build a conspiracy case against the gang members.
An example of a Facebook post referenced in the indictment:
Hmu... I got 64 lines of purple ACTIVIS wit da seal not none of dat stepd on water down (expletive) team eastside b talkin about ..... STR8DRP
Racketeering charges in the indictment carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison, but at least two of those indicted face life in prison face life in prison for more serious crimes, including murder and attempted murder in the aid of racketeering.
