If you did a taboo which violated the laws of the Gods, you could be sold into slavery. The Gods are of Odinani, the Igbo religion.

Was doing something taboo and criminal that common?

I also know it was warring tribes.

As it was millions of people sold - I know it was numerous tribes - but it’s hard to believe that many people were guilty.

And the children and babies... what about them?

Also, can you explain why tribes don’t like eachother? It’s hard for me to understand.

re: Criminal/taboo - It depends on your society. It's important to add that a punishment for kidnapping could also mean that you're sold into slavery in pre-colonial Igboland.

re:warring tribes - Get that 'tribal' conception out of your mind. Often, it was warring states. Ashanti v Oyo (Yoruba). Dahomey versus Ashanti. Sokoto Caliphate versus Borno Kingdom etc.

re: Children - Children were often sold into slavery. Over a million children were, I believe.

re: tribes not liking each other - Again, it was often states not liking each other in competition over land, resources, regional power etc.

An example of warring states in West Africa was the following:
1) The Oyo Empire (Yoruba-speaking state) falls into decline
2) Dahomey (Fon-speaking state) breaks away and wages war on the Oyo (Yoruba)
3) Northern part of Oyo is conquered by the Sokoto Caliphate (Led by Fulanis, included Hausa, Nupe etc.)
4) Oyo falls into civil war - Yorubas began selling each other into slavery en masse
5) A glut of Yoruba speaking slaves are sold to Cuba, Brazil etc.

Thanks for explaining.

Do you know why Children? And wouldn’t that go against beliefs?

On states not tribes - why today do many still not get along? Like not allowing eachother to marry and such - if the land and resources are not their own and not controlled by them?

re: children - Some people worship money over their Gods. Also, some people might view those children as 'other' if they're from a group you hate

Re: ethnic hatred - Compare it to why some black people in America hate cacs. Some groups have unfinished business with each other.

Thanks again!

I have to keep reminding myself that Africans do not care if you share the same skin color it’s about “states” ( instead of using tribes).

In a documentary I shared in another thread about going back to Africa (Ghana) one of proffesors stated that many Africans haven’t searched for their identity or know what it means to be “black” — do you believe this?

The statement is Around 45:42

No. Black people in Africa know that their black. But that identity is often less important than ethnic or religious identity. It's often when they go abroad, that White Supremacy/Arab Supremacy etc. becomes blatant enough to be the new foe.

In Europe, cacs slaughtered each other for centuries (They still do in Ukraine right now). But in America, they banded together to defeat indigenous people, to enslave blacks, discriminate against Chinese etc.

Do you think those that come to the states could ever think like White People banning together with others - but still see, learn and respect the Black Americans and our struggle — instead of questioning and sometimes fighting against us or disassociating?

Thanks for answering questions - truly trying to understand better.

Basically yeah it is and the way he looks at it is that he is buying back his Future. He is buying back the trajectory of his future and though the history is ugly he wants to make the future better :jbhmm:

Another thing I noticed is that he mentions slave ships and how they found some of the Manillas he got from sunken slave ships, so to those who say slave ships never brought us from Africa they should look into this.
This is wrong misinformed information .People believe not ALL so called black people were bought from Africa on slave ships.. Yall gotta stop spreading lies
