That point about managers tho...that shyt is the truth. They're always the inside man (or woman). It doesn't take much to get a manager on the label's side. Soon he's doing your work for you: he's the one who recommends that lawyer the label wants the artist to hire; he's the one who suggests the artist work with that in-house producer to keep costs down, etc.
When I worked in the label industry (it's not really a "music" industry) I saw this all the time. I remember one time an Asian intern came up to me and said "I don't mean to offend, but isn't the manager basically the house n-word in this system?" I couldn't even hate on him, dude was exactly right. For a small piece of the pie, the manager sells you up river. And if he's really smart he just might become a music exec in 10 years.
