there's a huge downside to this:

if they miss out on him, clusterfukk city awaits.
I mean, they were always going to have one of the worst records, regardless, so there was a stronger likelihood that they would miss out on Wembanyama and fall between the the next few picks anyway (with the state the team is in, Cade is probably good enough for a handful of wins).

If they miss out on him there's multiple paths they can go down.

I don't see any downside, whatsoever, let alone a huge one.

I’d rather them use Duren even if Cade is lost for the season just to figure out what it is they need. If he’s good then use that pick to trade for an established SF or swap down to draft someone else.

This draft is so SG heavy that there will be some solid SG’s looking for work.

They can still play Duren.

Shutting down Cade doesn't mean they have to abandon all their other projects (for the time being). It just gives them a greater chance of landing the #1 pick; if they don't, they'll still get a relatively higher pick than they were before, either to use themselves, trade and/or move down to add pieces that are a better fit.

There's no downside.
