I can't argue with this at all. You're right.
As someone who watching a lot of regular season basketball the one thing I still struggle with is that chasm between regular season and playoff basketball. It appeared to have grown and I hate admitting to myself that much of what I'm watching from November through April is downright meaningless. That's where a guy like Harden has made his name. It's hard for me to pretend that doesn't exists but you're right.
Yeah it's a different game. A lot of people struggle with this difference. I think a lot of it is due to how team treat the regular season now. It used to be that you went all out in every game. Star players played 40 + minutes (shyt they were damn near playing every minute back in the day) and guys played through injuries. The playoffs weren't as long back then, so they weren't like a completely separate entity. You can go all out if you only gotta play 2 or 3 series or you have some shorter series. You can't go all out all season when you gotta play four 7 game series over the course of 2 brutal months. Teams value possessions more so the game slows down. You also gotta look at officiating. You can play more physical. So you can run up and down all regular season but come playoff time you are gonna have to adjust to a slower more physical game. It becomes more of a chess match and more about heart. Some teams/players ain't built for that. The faster teams tend to underachieve come playoff time, while the more methodical, defensive teams tend to overachieve. A similar thing happens in football. Lastly, I think a new wrinkle is the variance that comes with 3s. So many teams are overly reliant on the 3. You can get away with that in the regular season when the game is up and down and being called tighter and teams aren't gameplanning like that. But when all that changes AND you have a cold streak (which is unavoidable) you are fukked. I predict that the NBA playoffs will become more unpredictable as more teams become more 3 heavy because of the variance that will come with it.
