It just dawned on me that what hurt the NBA isnt that Durant wanted to join the Warriors.
Its that the Warriors, Steph Curry in particular, were willing to adjust to him. Even if it meant sacrificing personal accolades.
The Warriors were already the most successful regular season team in history. Steph Curry the leagues first Unanimous MVP. They were a buzzsaw. An unstoppable juggernaut when in a rhythm,
They had no reason to adjust their scheme for him. And frankly the question had never come up in league history. Lets face it, it wouldve been sacrilege to ask Shaq/Kobe of the 3 peat Lakers to limit the scoring to fit another. Lebron wouldve had the ball pried from his dead hands if asked to not run the offense all the time in Miami. Jordan wouldve probably punched Jerry Krause in the face if asked to take possessions off to fit another star.
Not until the Warriors, IMO, have we seen a team already established as the best of their generation that is unselfish enough to fit another superstar. And self aware enough to recognize that Durant can do things that even their best star cannot.
With Demarcus Cousins however, we're seeing why this culture has inadvertently wrecked the leagues parity even more so than it was. Cousins saw how the Warriors treated Durant. That the Warriors realized that personal success and winning arent mutually exclusive concepts. In his diminished state, he knew that not only would the Warriors present his best chance to showcase his skills, they'd also have a high probability of getting him a ring too. And as long he'd prove himself as a weapon in their system, they'd make all the needed to allow him to perform.
Great for Cousins. Great for the Warriors as a team.
shytty for the rest of the NBA.
